A puppet-filled comedy follows a group of twenty-somethings seeking their purpose in big-city life.
Musical Director - Luke Baker
Avenue Q is a truly unique show that has quickly become a favourite for audiences everywhere. The show is filled with gut-busting humour and a delightfully catchy score, not to mention puppets. The show is a parody of PBS's Sesame Street and although it addresses humorous adult issues it is similar to the beloved children's show where puppets are friends, monsters are good and life lessons are learned.
The laugh-out-loud musical tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton, who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that, although the residents seem nice, it's clear that this is not your ordinary neighbourhood. Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs, dates and their ever-elusive purpose in life. The cast consists of three human characters and eleven puppet characters who interact with them. The puppet and human characters ignore the puppeteers, creating the illusion that the puppets are alive.
The musical premiered off-Broadway in 2003 and in July of that same year it moved to Broadway where it ran until 2009, playing for over 2,500 performances. Within weeks of ending its Broadway run the show transferred back to off-Broadway where it played until 2019 and a total of 6,569 performances. The show won the Tony “Triple Crown” in 2004 for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. The music and lyrics are by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx with book by Jeff Whitty.
