We're excited to bring you a thrilling summer of opera experiences, curated by one of Australia's great opera and festival directors: Lindy Hume. This season has a big focus on Australian voices and creative talent. We've found them so you can hear them, see them and celebrate them. Whether they're dazzling divas, masterful maestros or amazing acrobats, we want you to see the best.

Mozart's epic opera of gods and monsters, human frailty and the power of love.

Drowning at sea in a vicious storm, the King of Crete makes a terrible vow to Neptune. To save his ship and his men, he will sacrifice the first human life he encounters on land. Saved from the waves, Idomeneo comes ashore into a nightmare – kill his own son or set the vengeance of the Gods upon his people.

Rooted in ancient legend, this powerful opera explores utterly human themes: sacrifice, love and human frailty. The music is a vivid showpiece of the composer's power, subtlety and scope.

Lindy Hume's new production highlights the natural forces at play in the story. The immersive set evokes Australia's epic seas, skies and rugged coastlines.

Joan Sutherland Theatre

The home of Opera Australia and the Australian Ballet, the Joan Sutherland Theatre is the second largest indoor venue in the Opera House with a seated capacity for up to 1507. It features an extensive fly system and flexible staging and is suitable for all genres. Up to 70 musicians can be accommodated in the orchestra pit.
